Special Needs

As a music teacher and music subject leader when working in schools, I have more than 10 years of experience within the field of SEN Education working across all levels of need, from SLD, PMLD and ASD, always keen to work with those students labelled as “difficult to reach”. I am a great believer in transforming the so-called “barriers for learning” into opportunities for development. I have used music with SEN students successfully not just to teach instrumental music or singing but to develop transferrable skills that empower individuals to communicate, develop independent living skills and boost self-confidence.

I was also awarded the prestigious Jack Petchey Leader Award in 2014 for my contribution to working with vulnerable young people in the borough of Newham, London.

I can provide one to one private lessons for SEN students (providing parent or carer is present during the lesson) and also bespoke training and workshops for SEN schools on request bringing to the setting my vast experience regarding lesson planning, data analysis and alternative assessment tools and curriculum models and strategies such as Intensive and Music Interaction.

I qualified as Classical Piano Teacher by the CONSMUPA Conservatory of Oviedo (Spain) and I  have been teaching piano for almost 20 years to both children and adults in schools and privately both in Spain and the UK regardless of their level of need. As a performer and songwriter, also holding a Diploma in Music Performance & Production for keyboards by the London Centre of Contemporary Music (London),  I have a wide experience in the use of keyboard techniques and arrangements in all contemporary styles having learnt from and played with some of the most influential session keyboardists of the industry across the world.

My SEN students will benefit from unique approaches to music teaching such as:

  • Individualised first assessment based on EHC plans and other relevant documentation (free on first interview covering existing skills and knowledge as well as transforming goals and aspirations into clear learning objectives)
  • Personalised target setting including progress reports if agreed/needed.
  • Effective studying techniques and visual support resources (including multimedia resources to access at home)

I have QTS with an specialism in Music and hold an updated DBS.
